A new project sheet giving all the details you need to make something, or an advice sheet on sharpening, or sometimes a short article will appear each month in this section.
“Queens” Pepper & Salt Mill
Mechanism From Peter Child £3.38 Phone 01787 237 291
pepper in mech. ‘stainless metal’, Salt in hard plastic
(slightly smaller, see measurements on dwg.)
Screws also required, half inch size 4, preferably pan head
or better still 3mm by 12mm similar. Some people use
escutcheon pins.
Timber This design from 2¼ ”x 7”.
Method
Saw 5.3/8ths” from one end. Drill 1/4” hole in short part (top).
Mount top in chuck by original end and shape section to
enter mill body. Reverse in chuck and turn indent into top.
Be careful to establish the length as shown at 5/8”. Mount
scrap-wood in chuck and turn to fit indent, tightly. Mount
top between this and tail centre, shape outside of top.
Remount in chuck (or on screw chuck) by small end. Divide
to create twelve marks. Pencil six areas to be filed between
marks, scallop with Microplane or file, into pencilled areas,
each to same depth. Sand and polish.
Bore hole in main body while held in chuck. Counter bore
or turn bottom for mechanism. Check measurements at 5”
and 3/8”. Mount a small piece of a scrap-wood in chuck
and turn taper on end to fit main bore. Mount body between
this and live tail cone. Shape, sand and finish.
Fit the square holed drive plate to the underside of the top
using pins. Fit the rest of the mechanism through the base
and lastly the retaining strap using the silly little screws.
Pilot holes can be made with the point of a compass.
